Cultural Intersection Art Exhibition
June 25-July 3, 2009
Cultural Intersection is a unique exhibition showcased the work of 160 professional immigrant artists in Alberta who came from 121 countries. Calgary is a multicultural intersection where diverse cultural experiences form the fabric of our community; diverse cultural and religious perceptions merge and influence the contemporary art environment. The Calgary Multicultural Centre is the translator and the catalyst.
The exhibition featured visual art, design, photography and was located at two venues- Municipal Building Atrium at City of Calgary and EPCOR Centre for the performing Arts.
The poetry recital and musical performance was hosted at Calgary Public Library. Six poets presented their original written pieces and emotional stories accompanied by the violinist Radina Baharova (originally from Bulgaria) and the guitarist Alexander Zagumenov( from Russia).
“It’s a day to celebrate and appreciate Alberta’s diversity and talent of all that people who came from all over the world here. Today, they showcase their talent, their work, their hearts, and their countries. They are the Alberta changing face, they are stars of today and tomorrow, building the future for our kids,” said Honorable Mr. Lindsay Blackett, Alberta Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, who was the distinguished guest for the opening ceremony.
This classy event gathered artists, talented musicians, their families and friends, many guests.
Over 3,000 Calgarians and guests visited the exhibition.
During the exhibition, the visitors had a chance to choose the mostly liked art piece and nominate for People Choice Award . The two recipients (one from each venue) are:
Municipal building Atrium: Octavian Florescu ( Romania) for his work Dancing with Northern Lights
EPCOR Centre: Ricardo Sanches (Mexico) for his work Once Upon a Time at Vulcan There Was a Rhinoceros and Elevator
This project couldn’t happen without generous support of Alberta Lottery Funding and our partners: EPCOR Centre, Alberta Society of Artists, Calgary Herald, Calgary Public Library, City of Calgary-Arts & Culture Recreation, UNESCO- Canada, GES Canada, Intact Insurance -Bow Valley Insurance Services Ltd.
CMC is very proud of this successful event and of the opportunity to educate Calgarians about immigrants’ art contribution to our city.
